Sibanye Ready for Gold AcquisitionGold Silver Reports — Sibanye Gold Ltd., the biggest producer of the precious metal from South African mines, wants to buy a gold-producing asset by the end of the year, adding to its acquisitions of platinum operations in its home country.

The asset would have to make a “material difference” to Sibanye’s current output, meaning it would have to produce at least 200,000 ounces of gold a year, Chief Executive Officer Neal Froneman said in an interview after the company’s annual general meeting Tuesday. Any acquisition would have to be generating cash to help pay dividends, he said.

Inflation Weakness Helped Spur Rate Cut

Gold Silver Reports — A “broad-based” weakening of inflation pressures helped persuade Australia’s central bank that the economy would be assisted by an interest-rate cut even as the growth outlook remained steady. Central bank considered waiting for more data in May decision.

While Reserve Bank of Australia board members considered holding the cash rate unchanged so they could await more information, policy makers on May 3 opted to cut the benchmark by a quarter point to 1.75 %, according to the minutes of its latest policy meeting.
