China’s latest economic data
Copper prices rose on Monday amid upbeat sentiment, helped by China’s latest economic data and better demand outlook as the country rolled out more policy support for its currency and housing sectors.
Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange was up 1.6% at $8,375.50 per metric ton, as of 0746 GMT, after losing 3% last week.
The most-traded October copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange ended day-time trade 0.4% higher at 69,080 yuan per ton.
Some Chinese cities have lifted curbs on home purchases in one of the latest measures to revive demand in the property sector, a major consumer for industrial metal.
China’s central bank
Meanwhile, China’s central bank yanked the yuan off a 16-year low against the dollar by setting a daily midpoint guidance rate with the strongest bias on record.
The yuan’s weakness has weighed on the prices of copper, often seen as an economic bellwether. A weaker yuan makes it more expensive to import greenback-priced metals.
Economic Downturn
Aiding to upbeat sentiment, new bank lending beat expectations in China for August, joining other indicators showing a possible stabilisation in the economic downturn.
However, actual copper demand stayed lacklustre in the first week of September when demand typically rebounds, resulting in higher inventories of refined copper products, China Futures said.
U.S. inflation data
Copper stocks on SHFE rose for a third consecutive week on Friday to 54,955 tons. (CU-STX-SGH) Further, U.S. inflation data due later this week will provide more clarity on the interest rate outlook.
