The European Commission, European Parliament and Council of Ministers have proposed a directive, which aims to limit the amount of trade on markets such as the London International Financial Futures Exchange by those not associated with the food industry, according to media reports.

It was welcomed by UK’s Labour Member of the European Parliamen Arlene McCarthy who said speculators operating on the market caused distortion of food prices and volatility. But the National Farmers Union said the move would result in less being traded on EU futures markets, which, in a worst-case scenario, could lead to the collapse of the London market through lack of trading.

While the legislation has been agreed for the move, each of the EU’s member states has a certain amount of influence to implement the rules to best suit their relevant domestic market.
